Laser Eye Surgery Safety

Calgary Optometry Centre addresses laser eye surgery issues, questions & news:

Is Laser Refractive Surgery a Safe, Proven Technique?

Laser refractive surgery was first performed in Berlin, Germany in 1987.  Since that time, approximately 2,000,000 procedures have been performed around the world.  The procedure has been approved by the Health Protection Agency of Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The key aspects to a successful outcome are:
  • The accuracy of the correction.

Each candidate should remember that a specific end result cannot be guaranteed, although it can be closely predicted based on data from thousands of previous cases (see Candidates).

  • The physical healing of the eye.
As with any surgical procedure, laser refractive surgery has some possible risks and side effects that must be taken into consideration.  Serious complications are rare.  Infection is the greatest risk, but its occurrence is extremely infrequent.  Other possible complications include haze, scarring, induced astigmatism, and too much or too little healing response.  Most infections and complications are treatable with medication and / or further surgery.
